Well, the emotional rollercoaster I’ve been on since Lucas sold “Star Wars” perpetually continues with two announcements (official and unofficial). I will preface the announcement that with each day I grow fonder with the idea of further “Star Wars” adventures and the recent announcement of Mr. Abrams jumping into Lucas’ sandbox was music to this nerd’s ears. To add icing to the cake Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has announced that there will in fact be standalone movies amongst the future trilogy.
“There has been speculation about some stand-alone films that are in development,” Iger tells CNBC. “I can confirm to you today that, in fact, we are working on a few stand-alone films. Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great ‘Star Wars’ characters that are not part of the overall saga.”
All I can say is that while this does make me a little nervous, I have to say that I’m also pretty excited. Marvel has set a great precedent for creating a large overlapping universe between their characters, so the thought of that being put forth with “Star Wars” is promising.
As for the rumor of the day is that the first standalone film will be centered on everyone’s favorite green Jedi, Yoda. Yes, the same Yoda that died at the end of “Return of the Jedi” will be getting his own movie. If this is true I have to say I would be very disappointed. Apparently Disney learned nothing from the less than stellar prequels. I’m not too worried about this rumor since according to Iger’s rumor the standalone films would feature characters not part of the overall saga. Of course, only time will tell for sure.
Sound off below. Are you excited about spin-off films or think they may be overkill? Would you really want to see Yoda in his own film?
